Designing a Culture of Philanthropy from the Ground Up
For a brand new community hospital, having the support of our employees has been critically important—especially as we demonstrate the value of investing in our South Los Angeles safety net community. Learn strategies our small, collaborative fundraising team uses in creating a tradition of generosity through storytelling, brand identity, and design to encourage employees to become our most generous individual donors.
Priscilla joined the MLK Community Health Foundation in October 2017. She manages the foundation’s annual giving program, overseeing all fundraising events and implementing strategies to engage and grow the foundation’s donor base.
Prior to joining the foundation, Priscilla managed programs for several LA organizations whose missions align with her values––from affordable housing to foster care to food justice. She’s a Los Angeles native with six years of nonprofit experience in event management, program development, and volunteer stewardship.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz and her master’s degree in nonprofit administration from the University of San Francisco. While pursuing her graduate degree, she served as vice president of programs for the Nonprofit Student Council and launched its first speaker series, bringing prominent nonprofit professionals to campus.
Willa is the Sr. Specialist, Development Communications at the MLK Community Health Foundation. She oversees all digital communications, implementing annual giving strategy through her writing. Willa also supports the team with all fundraising activities, from event management to donor stewardship. Prior to MLK, she worked in communications at Food Forward, a Los Angeles nonprofit working to remedy food insecurity and food waste. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and creative writing at the University of Chicago.
Rita is the owner and creative director of RM Design Studio, based in Portland, Oregon. In 2012, she began designing for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital, three years prior to the hospital’s opening. She has collaborated closely with the MLK Community Health Foundation since its founding, directing its creative strategies and helping to build its brand identity from the ground up. She oversees the design of all foundation collateral, including design for the annual Dream Lunch fundraiser.
Prior to RM Design, Rita worked for a Los Angeles-based studio on primarily print projects for non-profit clients in the art, science, and education sectors. Clients included the Broad Foundation, LA County Museum of Art, and Museum of Contemporary Art.
She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
